The uncertain future
Honestly nowadays I'm having a sense of impending doom. The dying remains of the decentralized internet... The AI that's getting better and threatens to take white collar jobs... The climate change inaction... I don't know what the future holds.
AI crawlers cause a large amount of traffic to this website. As opposed to search engines that provide search results and bring in visitors. AI chatbots don't cite their sources. Many people solve this problem by raising paywalls. I considered bringing the website down. I've received only 2 e-mails: one from a person who liked the Minesweeper. And another one from someone who liked my gzip Deflate description. That was enough to remove the notification - for now.
So I'm thinking about making some kind of JavaScript client puzzle that crawlers won't bother to solve. The focus is on "bother", because AI scrapers have plenty of compute available to scrape any site if the really want to. Another alternative is shutting the website down and the spread thoughts offline only like in the pre-internet days, perhaps that makes more sense.
